Event: Uncensored Voices: Celebrating Literary Freedom
Time: 7:30 PM
Location: Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road, Las Vegas
Description: You are invited to an exciting event exploring censorship and the importance of artistic freedom. Hosted by local journalist and TV host Jon Ralston, Uncensored Voices: Celebrating Literary Freedom will feature dynamic readings by local authors and community leaders of frequently challenged works. Featured participants include Iranian author Moniro Ravanipour, Las Vegas author Dayvid Figler, Flo Rogers (General Manager of Nevada Public Radio), Kim Russell (Smith Center for the Performing Arts), Georgia Neu (Anti-Defamation League), Dr. Laura Henkel (Erotic Heritage Museum), and students from the Green Valley High School theater department.

The event will take place during the American Library Association’s Banned Books week, which runs from September 25-October 2nd, 2010. Programs are held across the country each year to draw attention to the many well-known and well-loved literary works that are frequently challenged or banned in communities nationwide. For example, last year in Henderson, Nevada, productions of Rent: Student Edition and The Laramie Project were challenged in court before ultimately being performed at Green Valley High School.

Thursday, September 30 - 7:00pm - 9:00pm. Reception at 7PM, Program at 7:30PM. Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road, Las Vegas, NV. Free and open to the public. Refreshments provided.
