| Description: |
Sarah Royce was one of the few female forty-niners on the California Trail. Following her husband and his dream of riches in California, she carried with her a commitment to a "traditional world" in which education was valued and women were the moral guardians of society. Despite numerous moves, Royce provided solid academic and moral training for her four children. She opened a school in Grass Valley, California, where she not only educated her children and those of her neighbors, but also provided a steady means of support for the family as her husband pursued his dream. Sarah Royce is portrayed by historian Doris Dwyer, who is nationally known for her portrayals of remarkable women. For information, call Park Supervisor Suzanne Sturtevant at 775-782-2590.
