SIDNE TESKE
The 2015 awards artist
Based in Tuscarora, Nevada, and primarily working with soft Schmincke pastels, award-winning artist Sidne Teske paints on location (en plein air), depicting the landscape with vibrant, energetic originality. When extreme weather makes it too difficult to explore the outdoors, Teske turns to her studio easel to create large expressive works that feature the human figure. Although she has taken some workshops over the span of her career, Teske is largely self-taught. Teske made ten original pieces for the 2015 Nevada Humanities Awards. The series was inspired by a desire to support Governor Sandoval’s new State Parks Passport program, which provides free access to Nevada’s state parks for one year after visitors have their passports stamped at 15 different parks. Each of the paintings was created on location inside a state park, and each painting includes a stamped passport page from the state park in which it was made. Teske says, “I like to be outdoors in all weather. Because I am racing the light to obtain a specific effect, I work very rapidly. The sound of bugs thwacking my board, the scratching of the pastels on my support, birds singing, and the sun on my face are comforting.”
