The Value of History in the Era of Fake News | A Nevada Humanities Salon
By the Staff of Nevada Humanities
Do you know about the Nevada Humanities Salon Series? You are invited to join us at Sundance Books and Music in Reno on Friday, November 16 for our final Salon of 2018—The Value of History in the Era of Fake News. Relevant right? That’s what this bi-monthly Salon Series is all about; topics that matter to the people of Nevada.
The Salon will feature a discussion about the value of using history to provide perspective on contemporary issues and the importance of bearing witness to the realities of injustice in our nation. We are pleased to welcome Dr. Allyson Hobbs, an Associate Professor of History and the Director of African and African American Studies at Stanford University, to participate in this Salon. She is the author of A Chosen Exile: A History of Racial Passing in American Life and the forthcoming Far From Sanctuary: African American Travel and the Road to Civil Rights. Alan Deutschman, Reynolds Chair of Business Journalism at the University of Nevada, Reno, will moderate this discussion. Like all of our Salons, our event on November 16 features a panel discussion, as well as an audience Q&A session and light refreshments.
Nevada Humanities Salons from 2018 focused on a wide variety of topics from the politics of protest to the connection of the worlds of poetry and dance to what happens when your writing suddenly “goes viral.”
Nevada Humanities also offers Pop-Up Salons that appear around Nevada. In 2018, our Pop-Up Salons showcased Michael Phillips, a film critic from the Chicago Tribune, a Creativity and Healing discussion around the Hearts4Vegas exhibition, and authors Julie Buntin and Sam Quinones talking about the opioid crisis and the power of story.
2019 promises innovative and creative Salon topics that will pique your interest. The Nevada Humanities bi-monthly Salon Series will return in January 2019 with spontaneous Pop-Up Salons across the state in 2019 too. Hope to see you at the Salon: The Value of History in the Era of Fake News!
