A new year of Great Basin Young Chautauqua (GBYC) has begun, and we are excited to share with you our plans for 2019. Our goal is to provide our Great Basin Young Chautauquans with a dynamic, inspiring, and educational season, in an atmosphere that is both fun and supportive. This year we brought in a variety of award-winning Chautauquans, theatre professionals, and lecturers who helped teach and mentor our Young Chautauquans as they prepared and perform their monologues this spring. GBYC favorites Frank X. Mullen, Juanita Westbrook, and Doug Mishler, as well as local theater experts, will lead our workshops. Young Chautauquans are giving public performances throughout May, with a larger GBYC Showcase May 31-June 1, 2019. To learn more about this program, call Nevada Humanities at 775-784-6587.

History
Founded by Nevada Humanities in 1993, GBYC is a nationally recognized and award-winning youth program in which young scholars research and portray historical figures. Through monologues and question-and-answer sessions, young scholars – in and out of character – engage their audience in lively discussions and provide insight into historical study. The GBYC program is a valuable way to increase a young person's understanding of and engagement with the humanities. In 2002, Nevada Humanities received a Coming Up Taller Award from the President's Commission on the Arts and Humanities for inventing and developing Young Chautauqua. Nevada Humanities celebrated the 20th anniversary of the GBYC program in 2012. The program continues to inspire and educate children in Nevada and beyond.

Underwriting for the program is provided by the generous support of the National Endowment for the Humanities, individual donors, parent and community volunteers, and many other community partners. To contribute to this program's perpetual health and vitality, consider making a gift to Nevada Humanities by visiting our website. All contributions are tax-deductible to the extent provided by law.
