If you lose all of your identification cards and papers, how will you go about confirming who you are? What does it mean when “who you are” is so intimately connected to our online marketing databases, and state surveillance dossiers? Philosopher Colin Koopman will address these and other questions at The Salon: How We Became Our Data on Friday, September 20, 2019 beginning at 6:00 pm at Sundance Books and Music in Reno. The evening will highlight the history of data collection, new data-tracking technologies, and their consequences about who we are and how we express selfhood.

A moderated conversation and audience discussion will follow.

Colin Koopman is associate professor of philosophy and director of the New Media & Culture Program at the University of Oregon. The Nevada Humanities Salon Series is held bi-monthly and features a panel discussion with topics relevant to the humanities in Nevada, as well as an audience Q & A session and light refreshments.
