Paving the Way: Conceiving and Crafting Diverse Characters for Inclusive Literature
We don’t live in a homogeneous society. Neither should our characters. Despite the demand for diverse narratives, many don't know how to execute inclusive writing without perpetuating hurtful tropes and stereotypes.
In this workshop, we will help authors navigate the unfamiliar terrain of writing outside their own identities with empathy and understanding. Guest speaker Rodney Lee, member of CCSD’s Equity and Diversity Education Department, will offer the foreword. Moderated by Tonya Todd, our panel will address this challenge with guidance from Gregory Kompes, Dr. Sherry Rosenthal, Amanda Skenandore, and Dr. Karen Laing. After Q & A, participants will practice what they’ve learned with writing prompts, then share their work to improve in a safe, judgment-free environment.
