Wonders of Nature: Impressions of Landscape with Ahren Hertel
This workshop will focus on creating the impression of landscape. You will be working from memory, observation or reference imagery to create a painting that speaks of a place rather than illustrating it. We will be abstracting by creating parameters for ourselves such as a limited palette, short range of brushes and prioritizing space or atmosphere over accuracy.
Suggested Materials
-Oil or Acrylic Paint

-Primed panel, canvas or paper depending on chosen medium and preference
-If painting in Acrylic, container for water
-If painting in Oil, brush washer or cleaning tank with terpenoid or preferred solvent
-Paper towels or rag

About Ahren Hertel
Ahren Hertel was born in Ft. Collins, Colorado. His father’s job as an exploration geologist moved the family between Chile, Bolivia and Reno, Nevada. Hertel attended the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia where he received his BFA in Illustration in 2002. He later received his MFA from the University of Nevada, Reno in 2009. Interested largely in environmental issues, his work consists of both landscape and figurative work. He has displayed his paintings in solo and group exhibitions across the United States, including “Tilting the Basin” at the Nevada Museum of Art and “Match” at Oats Park Art Center in Fallon, NV. He received the Nevada Arts Council 2012 Visual Arts Fellowship Grant, among other awards. Currently he is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Art at the University of Nevada, Reno and a working artist.
