Great Basin National Park is the only national park located entirely within the state of Nevada. Whether you have had the chance to visit in person or not, you can take the opportunity to connect more deeply with Great Basin during this year of celebration of Lehman Caves, which became a National Monument 100 years ago in 1922. Lehman Caves National Monument later expanded to become Great Basin National Park in 1986. Great Basin National Park Foundation invites you to a Lehman Caves Virtual lecture series connecting you to the science of this amazing place. Sponsored in part by Nevada Humanities and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
Dr. Louise Hose, former Director of the National Cave and Karst Research Institute, has explored and studied caves throughout the world for 50 years. Following a long career as an academic geologist, she continues her cave investigations on a volunteer basis around Nevada, with a particular focus on Lehman Caves in Great Basin National Park. At this event, learn how Lehman Caves’ beautiful mineral decorations—its calcite shields, stalactites, and helictites disguise the cave’s fascinating, geologic past—in this virtual lecture.
