"Nope" Talkback and Watch Party

Join Nevada Humanities and the Core Humanities program at the University of Nevada, Reno on Tuesday, April 9 from 6:00 - 8:00 pm PT, for a community talkback and watch party of Jordan Peele’s horror western Nope (2022). Pop your popcorn, grab your dinner and drinks, and sign on to Zoom using the link provided at registration. We’ll provide a brief introduction to the movie and then countdown so that we’re all starting the film at the same time.

During the movie, we’ll use the Zoom chat to talk about what we’re noticing, what’s scaring us, what reminds us of other Jordan Peele films, and more. If you’re joining a little late, not to worry, we’ll let you know the timestamp and you can join in the conversation.

To prepare for the watch party, you’ll need to rent Nope on your streaming platform of choice. Students and instructors at UNR and UNLV may be able to access the films through their libraries (please give yourself time to login to SWANK). While this watch party is in preparation for the in-person talk later this week with Dr. Mikal Gaines (MCPHS), the event is free and open to the public and anyone interested in watching and discussing the film in good company.

Please note that you must be signed into a Zoom account in order to participate.

On Thursday, April 11, from 6-8 pm, Dr. Gaines will share his analysis of Nope and help us understand the complexity of Peele’s creature feature, connecting the film to theories of Blackness, abjection, and violence that have been important to recent studies of Black horror cinema.
