In partnership with Carson City Parks and Recreation, join Nevada Humanities, Great Basin Fire Science Exchange, and local author and educator Donald Scott for a walk and talk at Carson River Park to share stories and learn more about living with fire in the Great Basin. Participants will learn about the Great Basin ecosystem and past and present fire regimes; human, soil, and plant adaptations to living with fire; strategies for identifying and navigating fires; stories inspired by fire; and more.
All participants will receive a copy of Sagebrush to Sandstone: A Humanities Guide to Outdoor Nevada. This event is free to the public but it is limited capacity with advance registration required.
This program is supported with funding by the Charles Redd Center for Western Studies at Brigham Young University and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
About Great Basin Fire Science Exchange
The Great Basin Fire Science Exchange (GBFSE) connects land managers and scientists to improve pre- and post-fire management decisions by providing relevant information and access to technical expertise. To learn more about the GBFSE, watch their short video, Getting to Know the GBFSE and review their Story Map highlighting 10 years of projects, events, and resources made possible by the GBFSE.
This project is one of 15 regional Fire Science Exchanges funded by the Joint Fire Science Program. The project works to:
Provide a forum for identification of fire, fuels, and post-fire vegetation management technical needs
Develop and synthesize the information and technical tools to meet these needs
Provide the information and technical tools through preferred venues
Develop direct lines of communication between scientists and managers.
Donald M. Scott taught high school, adult school, and community college. He also worked as a National Park Ranger and the NASA state educational representative for Nevada and other states as well as caretaker for historic Walking Box Ranch. A published writer, Scott lives in Carson City.
