With the opening of a substantial new museum of art at the University of Nevada, Reno, it is fitting that the museum’s inaugural exhibition is one that contends with the authority of these exhibition spaces while interrogating the mission and legacy of institutional collection and display practices. The John and Geraldine Lilley Museum of Art hosts Terma, Images from the Ear or Groin or Somewhere, from January 25 – March 7, 2019. Terma is the result of an international collaboration between Canadian artist Sameer Farooq and American poet Jared Stanley. Terma is composed of five elemental segments: Twenty-Four Affections, If it were possible to collect all navels of the world on the steps to ASCENSION, Seven Essays, Paperwork, and Resting Spot for the Eyes. In their own idiosyncratic way, each of these elements reference the fraught history of museum spaces and challenge visitors to reimagine what a museum might be.
