Advocacy matters! Join Nevada Humanities for an engaging and informative discussion about cultural and education advocacy and how the work of public officials and advocates has helped richly shape the cultural and educational life of Nevadans. A panel of experts will join a discussion moderated by Christina Barr, Executive Director of Nevada Humanities. Audience discussion and light refreshments will follow.

 Participants will include: 

 Nancy E. Brune is the Executive Director of the Kenny Guinn Center for Policy Priorities, a statewide policy research center providing independent, data-driven analysis on issues of tax and fiscal policy, education, economic development, and natural resource security. She also serves as a Senior Fellow at the UNLV William S. Boyd School of Law. In 2016, President Obama appointed Dr. Brune to the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. She is the author of over 80 peer-reviewed journal articles, reports, essays, blogs, and op-ed pieces.

 Mary-Ellen McMullen was the co-owner of the McMullen Strategic Group, a government affairs firm, from 1991-2005. She is a past chair of the University of Nevada, Reno Foundation and has also served as chair of Nevada Humanities, the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra, and the Nevada Women’s Fund. 

Julia Ratti is the Assistant Majority Leader of the Nevada Senate. She represents the 13th district, which covers parts of Washoe County, including much of Sparks and Reno. During the 2019 legislative session, she was the Chair of Senate Committee on Health and Human Services and Vice-Chair of the Senate Committee on Revenue. She has been an advocate for improved access to health care, affordable housing and tax reform among other issues.

The Nevada Humanities Salon Series is held bi-monthly and features a panel discussion with topics relevant to the humanities in Nevada, as well as an audience Q & A session and light refreshments.
